Top SightsWenceslas Square

This massive central square was founded by Charles IV in 1348. For hundreds of years it was called the ‘Horse Market’ and featured a small lake, horse-drawn trams and the first Czech theatre. In medieval times it was also the site of several public executions. On 28 October 1918, the independent republic of Czechoslovakia was announced here; in 1945 the end of WWII was declared and celebrated. Later, during the Velvet Revolution, the square hosted huge, historic demonstrations.
